Do you want to diffuse essential oils but you don’t have an electric diffuser?
It’s important to know that you can still enjoy the scent of essential oils in your room even if you don’t have a diffuser. There are many natural ways to diffuse essential oils. One popular natural diffuser is the reed diffusers. These are little jars with scented oils and sticks popping out of them. They are wonderful diffusers and they are also decorative.
Most commercial reed diffusers give off a strong, overpowering scent because they used artificially scented oils. Artificial fragrances are not good for health and for the environment. They are also quite expensive.
It is actually easy to make homemade natural diffuser. One of the advantages of making your own is that you can use natural ingredients like essential oils. You can design them any way you want to decorate your room. You can also use any essential oil that you want.
.
When making homemade reed diffusers, choose a small, short jar with a narrow opening. The smaller the opening, the slower the essential oils will evaporate. You can reuse some old jars like perfume bottles, small oil bottles, small vases, spice jars, and even shakers.
The carrier oil or the base oil should be the type that is light so that it can travel up the reeds more easily. Don’t use regular vegetable oil because it is too thick and won’t work at all. If you don’t want to use oil as the base of your reed diffusers, then you can also use plain or distilled water. However, if you use water, the diffuser liquid will evaporate much more quickly.
Reeds made from rattan are usually used in commercial diffusers. Rattan has small channels that help the essential oil travel up the stick to disperse the scent. You can purchase reed diffuser sticks online and most are pretty much affordable. You can also use bamboo skewers, especially if you are using water as your base. Bamboo won’t get oversaturated with the water because they are less porous than traditional reeds. If you are going to use bamboo skewers, trim off the pointy ends. Make sure the reeds or sticks that you are going to use are about twice as tall as your jar. This way, they can distribute and disperse the scent of the essential oil very well.
You can use any essential oil that you prefer. Each essential oil has its own unique scent and benefits. For example, lavender essential oil has a great scent and is also very relaxing. Frankincense is good for meditation while rosemary can help you focus more.
DIRECTIONS
1. Add ¼ cup of safflower oil in the glass jar.
2. Add 30 drops of essential oil and stir to mix the oils well.
3. Insert the sticks into the jar.
4. After a few hours, flip the sticks over and insert the dry end into the jar to saturate the other end.
5. Place your reed diffuser on a safe place away from the reach of children and pets.
A homemade reed diffuser disperses a very light, subtle scent. Swirl the jar and flip the sticks over about every week or so or until the scent is already gone. Simply add more essential oils and swirl again. However, when the sticks are completely saturated with oil, you will have to replace them because they can’t diffuse any more. Also, if the liquid in the jar starts to look and smell bad, you have to throw it out, wash the jar and make a new one.
