Do you have varicose veins? Also known as spider veins, these are veins that are bigger in size than the normal veins. They commonly appear in the legs. Varicose veins are very visible because they are often raised and twisted. They can appear as blue, red or flesh-colored. Sometimes, varicose veins can itch, ache or swell.
The main function of veins is to return blood that does not have oxygen back toward the heart. Tiny valves located periodically throughout the veins stop the blood from flowing backward. When these valves weaken or get damaged, the blood can flow backward and accumulate, resulting in varicose veins. Varicose veins are usually in the legs because there is greatest pressure in the leg veins to return blood to the heart.
Common causes of varicose veins
1. As we get older, the valves in our veins start to weaken or get damaged
2. The growing uterus puts extra pressure on a pregnant woman’s veins
3. Being overweight
4. Sitting down for long periods of time
5. Genetic history
Most cases of varicose veins are not really concerning. However, some find it irritating and sometimes itchy or painful. There are also cases when sores or skin ulcers are experienced due to poor blood flow in the legs. Although there are new treatments for varicose veins, if the person is not experiencing significant symptoms or side effects, then these medical treatments are not necessary.
How to prevent varicose veins
There are some steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of varicose veins. Possible steps to prevent them are the following:
1. Maintaining a healthy weight.
2. Exercising regularly to improve blood circulation.
3. Avoiding crossing the legs for a long time.
4. Standing up and walking from time to time when sitting for a long period of time.
5. Wearing support stockings that gives mild pressure to compress the legs and encourage the return of blood flow.
